In the Owners Words
We moved to the Housel Bay Hotel because we fell in love with it the moment we saw it, its truly a magical and unique place. We have brought up three children here and it has been the perfect environment for them. They have made the most out of the local beaches and the area as a whole. Opportunities like this dont come around often so we consider ourselves extremely privileged to have been a part of it
Entering from the parking area a reception desk with adjoining office greets you in the inner hallway. Directly opposite is a comfortable lounge with a large bay window with window seats. Next door there is a bar area with doors leading out to a conservatory which runs across the front of the building connecting the bar and dining areas. The main dining area (50 covers) also features a large bay window, giving each of the principal rooms superb views over the grounds and un-interrupted views of the sea. A fully stocked commercial kitchen is at the rear of the hotel within a wing which includes various store rooms and a staff room. From the main hall stairs and a lift provide access to the first and second floors. All of the 21 guest bedrooms offer en-suite facilities, and the majority have superb sea views. In the North-West wing of the first floor there is a three bedroom flat for the owners use. The flat has a generous sitting room, kitchen, family bathroom and master bedroom with en-suite.
Ground & Gardens
To the side of the house is a large parking area which extends to the rear of the property. A large terrace to the front overlooks a level lawned area ideal for marquees, and has a decked area for guests. A fence marks the boundary of the garden, beyond which the south west coastal foot path passes running between the village and the neighbouring village of Cadgwith. Steps from this path lead down to Housel Beach. Open to the public, yet used predominantly by the hotel guests. The house and its grounds all enjoy superb views from this most dramatic of locations.
The house is located a short walk from the village and overlooks its own beach on the southern coast of the Lizard Peninsula. One of the most beautiful, unspoilt areas of the southern Cornish coast with amazing river and coastal scenery it is perfect for walking, cycling, sailing and fishing and as you drive south from Helston it really does feel as if you are entering a different world. Local facilities in the village include a primary school, church, shop, Post Office, newsagent, pub, restaurant, bakery, garage and doctors surgery. There is an excellent secondary school at Mullion for which a school bus collects local children. There is also a very good Golf Club at Mullion as well as shops and restaurants. The Lizard peninsula which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is rich in history and it is said that the remote location and many creeks allowed smugglers to continue to function here long after their business had been successfully eradicated elsewhere. The nearest commercial centres are Helston (11 miles) and Falmouth (20 miles). The Cathedral city of Truro (24 miles) offers more comprehensive facilities including private and public sector schooling.
The Directors, local business people, commissioned a well known local architect, Silvanus Trevail, to design a new hotel. Trevail designed many of the "more modern buildings in Cornwall". He was widely travelled in Europe and the Americas and was celebrated 'as far afield as London, Sydney and Paris'. Plans were laid, designs approved. The hotel was, in the words of the original builder, Mr. Carkeek, 'positively carved out of the rock - for the stone with which it was built came from the hill on which it stood and was carved and formed upon the spot'. Down the narrow roads of the Lizard were transported Cornish slate, wood, glass and the many other materials needed to build Housel Bay Hotel. An excerpt from the hotels website: www.houselbay.com
