A charming detached former chapel offering accommodation on a single level with some beautifully proportioned rooms. Close to the town and amenities and with views towards the Axe Estuary and sea.
The Chapel is a unique Grade II Listed detached home which has a particularly interesting history and offers single storey living with the convenience of the town close at hand. It sits next to an impressive late Georgian Gothic house which was built in 1834 by Commander William Henry Baptist Proby, a well respected naval commander during the early part of the 19th century. The chapel was added in the latter 1800s by the subsequent owner, a Rev Clarence John Soanes. The house and grounds were used as a military hospital during the first world war, before becoming a girls boarding school and subsequently a children's home. The estate was purchase by Prowting Homes in 1998, when The Chapel was extended and converted into the stylish home we find today.
The Chapel has several notable features and worthy of particular mention is the sitting room which is an elegant lofty and vaulted room with a bay with arched windows and French doors onto the terrace. The principal bedroom is also worthy of note and this is again vaulted and has a beautiful ecclesiastical stained glass window.
The Chapel is situated in a slightly elevated position thus gaining splendid country and coastal views over the Axe Estuary and Axe Cliff to the east and sea glimpses to the south. It is located on the prestigious Ryalls Court development which is centred around the magnificent Grade II Listed country house, formerly known as Ryalls, of which The Chapel was added around the turn of the last century.
Seaton is a popular bustling coastal town situated on the World Heritage Site known as the Jurassic Coast. It has a long esplanade and pebble beach and an excellent selection of shopping and recreational facilities. There are many walks, both coastal and country close to hand, which include the South West Peninsular Coastal Path, as well as the Axe Estuary, which is a well-known location for serious bird watchers.
The busy market town of Axminster is approximately 7 miles to the north-east and has a good range of shops, schools and leisure facilities with main line rail link to London (Waterloo).
The county town of Exeter lies about 26 miles away to the west and has excellent shopping and sporting facilities, theatres, art centre, main line rail link to London (Paddington), an international airport and access to the M5.
The property is approached from Ryalls Court over a brick paviered driveway which provides parking for several vehicles. Adjacent to this is the former double garage which was converted by the previous owners into two offices/studios. These are insulated with power and light and would be ideal for those with hobbies or who work from home.
There are small areas of garden to the front and side, with the majority lying to the rear where there is a raised paved terrace. This can be accessed through French doors from the kitchen and sitting room and affords delightful views over the town, with glimpses of the sea, and to the Axe Estuary and Axe Cliff. To a lower level and bounded by a high wall is a further paved and gravelled area with a pergola.
