Honiton is a bustling market town which sits in the heart of East Devon, amongst some of the county’s most picturesque rolling countryside.
It is sandwiched between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the ‘East Devon’ and ‘Blackdown Hills’, and is often referred to as the ‘gateway to the west’ with Daniel Defoe describing the view from Honiton Hill as “the most beautiful landscape in the world”. The town is renowned as an antique and book centre and is also famous for its intricate lace, which has been used in many royal garments including Queen Victoria’s wedding dress.
Honiton is surrounded by a plethora of charming villages, many of which have a street scene which has not changed in hundreds of years. Country villages such as Gittisham and Broadhembury are home to the quintessential thatched cottage, as are many of the coastal villages such as Branscombe and the beautiful fishing village of Beer.
The World Heritage Jurassic Coast lies only a few miles to the south and is home to some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the country. The jewel in the crown of Lyme Bay is the Regency town of Sidmouth, with its wide pebble and sand beach, long esplanade, beautiful gardens and handsome period hotels.
Great eats – Honiton boasts many great restaurants and cafes. In particular, The Holt stands out for its fantastic food and they also run cooking, smoking and curing classes. For a ‘finer’ dining experience there is The Pig at Combe in Gittisham. Set in a magnificent Elizabethan Country Manor, this is a fabulous experience in a setting to die for. And finally, Lympstone Manor, owned by influential chef Michael Caines MBE, and awarded a Michelin Star within six months of opening, this is a serious destination for any lover of fine food.
The Cathedral City of Exeter and Devon’s County Town. This beautiful and historic city is centred around the glorious Cathedral, which was completed around 1400, much of which was built using local stone mined at the nearby coastal village of Beer. Exeter has seen huge investment in recent years and has a fabulous shopping centre, fantastic food hub and beautiful quayside along the River Exe.
Colyton, an ancient town with a fascinating history and home to the renowned Colyton Grammar School, one of the country’s top mixed state schools. From here you can get a tram to Seaton on the coast, which travels through the stunning River Axe Wetlands where there is an abundance of wildlife and several hides for the keen birdwatcher
