Renowned for its beauty and charm, this picturesque medieval village has been featured in film and TV… why? well if you visit, it will be obvious.
This achingly beautiful village lies high above the valley of the River Stour offering breathtaking views across the the beautiful rolling Kent Downs. Set equidistant between Canterbury and Ashford it’s set in a perfect location for making the most of South East Kent. At its heart, is the beautifully preserved medieval square, surrounded by timber framed houses of Tudor origin, a 16th Century church and the wonderful Chilham Castle which although privately owned holds select events throughout the year and hosts Shakespeare’s Globe, a setting venue due to its many links with Shakespeare.
Chilham’s elevated position gives breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside and sits on both the North Downs Way (tread the same path that Mr D’Arcy walked to Godmersham Park) and historical Pilgrims’ Way which leads to Canterbury. It’s no wonder that this exquisite old English village setting has featured in numerous film and TV productions including; Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’, Agatha Christie and ‘A Canterbury Tale’. Chilham is also the home to the The Domaine Evremond vineyard – an exciting joint venture between Champagne Taittinger and Hatch Mansfield Ltd, and friends – plantings now total over 28 hectares which will produce English Sparking wine to be released in 2024.
The village is well served and includes; a tea room, two pubs, gift shop, post office, a village hall and church. Nearby there is a farm shop and antique centre. Chilham Station provides links to HSR services from Ashford International to London (St Pancras 36 mins) and there is a bus service. Both the A28 and A252 provide road links to the M20 and Canterbury (about 6 miles). And if you need to escape the buzz of Chilham, then the coast is only a short rail, bus or drive away. You could even drive to Ashford International (9 miles) and jump on the Eurostar to enjoy Paris. So don’t tell everyone, infact don’t tell anyone, we really need to keep Chilham our little secret…
