Overview of Canterbury

The historic City of Canterbury sits in the heart of east of Kent and this year celebrates 30 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 1012 it’s been a well-trodden destination for pilgrims, but now is consistently one of the most-visited cities in the UK with tourists travelling to view the shrine for Thomas Becket (set in the Cathedral) which serves as the frame for Geoffrey Chaucer’s 14th Century classic – The Canterbury Tales. Because of its medieval status there are numerous historical buildings to be found in and around Canterbury; the Roman wall, St Augustine’s Abbey and a Norman castle to name a few. There are some exceptional schools too, both public and private. It’s worth mentioning that the oldest extant school in the world, the King’s School, can be found nestled within the City walls – try spotting the students with their distinctive winged collar!

If you’re a fan of the arts, then look no further with the modern Marlowe Theatre featuring shows from the London stage, The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge and the University of Kent with its modern music hall sits within the arts complex adjacent to the theatre and the cinema. This campus is all inclusive and locals enjoy exceptional facilities and fabulous performances – this is not just for students!

You can also take your pick from sporting activities with the home of Kent County Cricket based at the St Lawrence Ground. It has hosted several one day internationals and one England match. There are also superb rugby, hockey and football clubs to be found as well as various sports complexes.
