Sidmouth is often referred to as the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of Lyme Bay and sits amongst some of the county’s most picturesque countryside within the East Devon AONB.
Its coastline was designated as Britain’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Jurassic Coast which stretches for some 95 miles and holds 185 million years of geological history. Sidmouth is home to a thriving community and has an excellent selection of shops and boutiques, restaurants and cafes, and fine period hotels. A must place to visit if you find yourself on the south coast of the West Country.
Jacobs Ladder Beach - Located at the westerly end of Sidmouth, this is a gorgeous sandy beach with rock pools at low tide. It can be accessed from the main pebbled beach, however gets its name from the iconic white timber steps that descend from Connaught Gardens. During the mid-Victorain era, and after the cliff-cut steps were wash away in a storm, a steep ladder was created to gain access to the beach. This, however, was unpopular as if was difficult to use in the period dress, so the timber staircase was constructed.
Connaught Gardens – Opened as a public park in 1934, Connaught Gardens is a stunning, partly walled cliff-top garden which gains spectacular views over the sea and dramatic coastline. A stunning place to enjoy a cream tea at the Clock Tower Café.
The South West Coast Path - Stretching over 630 miles around the South West Coast, this is the longest National Trail in the UK and takes in the fascinating and ancient geological diversity of this stretch of coastline.
Just have a stroll around and take in the architecture - Sidmouth is famed for its beautiful Regency seafront, with many of the properties having Gothic influences and elaborate wrought iron balconies and detailing. It is also arguably one of the best places to see examples of Cottage Ornés, decorative cottages of the late 18th/early 19th centuries. With high-gabled and shaped thatched roofs, lattice windows and ornamental timberwork, these are some of the most picturesque buildings in the country.
The Donkey Sanctuary – One of the areas most loved attractions and a great day out for the family, The Donkey Sanctuary is open 365 days of the year and admission is free. See what amazing work this worldwide charity does and meet the 100’s of donkeys they house at their East Devon site.
