Well Cottage is a Grade II listed period cottage, dated 1549. Formerly listed as Pilgrims Cottage (as it is located on the historical Pilgrims Way that runs through the village), this pretty timber framed house is set just off the main square in Chilham. Historical documents show that the village laundry (no longer there) was sited in the garden of Well Cottage).
Renowned for its beauty and charm, this picturesque village lies high above the valley of the River Stour in the beautiful rolling Kent Downs, equidistant between Canterbury and Ashford. At its heart, is the beautifully preserved medieval square, surrounded by timber framed houses of Tudor origin, a 16th Century church and the wonderful Chilham Castle which although privately owned holds select events throughout the year and hosts Shakespeares Globe, a setting venue as Shakespeare visited the castle. Chilhams elevated position gives breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside and sits on both the North Downs Way (tread the same path that Mr DArcy walked to Godmersham Park) and historical Pilgrims Way which leads to Canterbury. Its no wonder that this exquisite old English village setting has featured in numerous film and TV productions including; Jane Austens Emma, Agatha Christie and A Canterbury Tale.
As you enter the mid century modern doorway you immediately get a sense of history from its heavily beamed ceiling, wood floor and stone fireplace. This cottage has endless character and although requiring updating, it doesnt take much imagination to realise this cottage is special in every way. Particular features include; timber beam ceilings, studded doorways and beautiful stone fireplaces.
Originally, on the first floor there were three bedrooms, but during the 1970s this was reconfigured to provide two bedrooms a larger bathroom and upstairs utility room. This could easily be re-configured to the original floorplan which would then provide three bedrooms (two double and one single).
Set off a pretty courtyard garden is an outbuilding sectioned in to three. This has been reroofed and could provide a work area, or even a holiday let, subject to the necessary consents.
There is a single garage available a short distance from the property.
The village is well served and includes; a tea room, two pubs, gift shop, post office, a village hall and church. Nearby there is a farm shop and antique centre. Chilham Station provides links to HSR services to London (St Pancras 49 mins) and there is a bus service. Both the A28 and A252 provide road links to the M20 and Canterbury.
